My Story: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly—A Journey of Continuous Spiritual Formation
I always questioned why I wasn’t born perfect—why I didn’t have great natural talents, a pure heart, or the ability to always do the right thing. As a child, I even asked God if there was a way for Him (or a doctor) to show me my heart, so I could know if it was more black (bad) or white (good)—and then finally be certain that I was “okay.”
For the first part of my life, up until about 28 years old, my journey with God was mostly about asking Him to help us stay safe, to keep us protected, and to progress and be successful in my career as HR Professional. But then, after the birth of my son, I experienced a love unlike anything I’d known before. As my dear friend Alet so beautifully put it, “I gave birth to my ambition”—my children. This was the moment God changed my purpose. My perspective on life and what truly matters was completely reshaped.
Sounds like an “ah-ha” moment, right? Well, yes and no. While my purpose shifted, the road ahead was far from easy. At 40, my wilderness journey truly began. And though I’m 47 (in 2024) and still navigating that journey, it’s filled with lessons, hardships, discernment, and teachings of hope, faith, and love. The road hasn’t been clear or simple, but it has been rich with growth.
In 2024, at a birthday party, I had a conversation that radically shifted how I saw the world—and more importantly, how I realized others see us. A lady, who I’d never met, approached me and said, “I’ve been watching you and your family at church for years. You always seemed so perfect, like you had it all together.” Then, with a smile, she added, “But now I see you at this party, and... you can party!”
That moment really stuck with me. It reminded me how people often perceive us, assuming that we need to fit into a perfect mold to be accepted. But here’s the truth: we don’t have to fit into a perfect box. In fact, we are all part of the body of Christ, each with our unique gifts, talents, and circles of influence. Whether you’re worshipping in church, celebrating at a party, working, being a dedicated housewife, or raising a family, each part of your journey matters.
I need to add that I LOVE South Africa and I believe our nation, with all our hardships, can share our experiences and enrich lives.
My doro-ella Journey: Building Spiritual Capital
I joined my first Bible workshop (Covenant relationship) when I was 27, and it changed my view of God completely. This is where my journey with God began to take a deeper turn—towards purpose, growth, and service. doro-ella, which means “a gift entirely from God,” is rooted in the realization that faith isn’t just about asking for protection, but about trusting, evolving, and living a life filled with purpose. Whether you’re walking with God in moments of joy or struggle, these journeys empower you to deepen your spiritual connection and align your life with a higher purpose.
My Wink Journey: Towards Social Capital
As I continue in my journey of formation —sometimes moving forward, sometimes taking steps back—I began to see the importance of relationships—both with myself and with others. The Wink represents those moments of recognition—whether it’s looking within or truly connecting with the people around you. This journey is about understanding the power of authentic relationships, fostering personal growth, and learning how to make a lasting impact in your community, all while embracing your unique personality and gifts.
My Movement Journey: Towards Sustainable Development
Eternity matters, and so does our life now on earth. After my shift in perspective, I saw that purpose isn’t just about making money, having a great job and/or your personal spiritual growth—it’s about stewardship and contributing to the world around us. Movement is the journey of sustainable development, where we are called to lead in our work, homes, and communities with purpose, integrity, and love. It’s about taking ownership of your role in creation and making an impact that transcends personal success.
